Welcome to The University of Alabama School of Social Work and its CSWE-accredited BSW Program whether you are a Social Work major, Social Welfare minor, or prospective applicant to our program, you should find useful information on this website. We have an excellent academic program with many resources available to you. Several of our students have noted that we provide “a friendly, homey environment on a large university campus.”

The School of Social Work is centrally located in its own building on University Boulevard, right next door to the President’s Mansion. Most Social Work classes are held in this building. Our challenging curriculum includes courses in the classroom and in the field. Field education occurs in the fall semester of the senior year. Field placements are available in a variety of agencies and settings.

Our students have a lounge and a kitchen with coffee pots, microwave ovens, a refrigerator, a large ice maker, and a stove. Students can gather for study sessions and have refreshments while they work together. The student computer lab is available to our professional-level students 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. One classroom is equipped with cameras to video students during role-play sessions in which students practice the skills of interviewing and intervention with individuals, families, and groups. The students and instructor then review the student’s performance. Several professors enhance their courses with audiovisual technology, such as WebCT.

Our registrar assists students with questions about registration, their grade point average, etc., and our librarian assists students with library research. Each student is assigned an academic advisor who can assist students with course planning and answer questions about careers in Social Work. Our assistants for Student Services serve as academic advisors, and link students with prospective employers, information about the social work licensing exam, and information about graduate programs. Personnel are available to our students by telephone and email, as well as during daily office hours without an appointment. Faculty advisors are available during office hours and by appointment.

Our B.S.W. Program is unique within the state in having all of these resources as well as the opportunity for undergraduate students to associate with our M.S.W. and Ph.D. students. The student organizations for each of our programs elect representatives to serve with faculty on important committees within the School. Our student organizations have jointly sponsored service projects, celebrations, and other events.

Please contact me if you are interested in a degree program in social work at bachandl@sw.ua.edu, (205) 348-3934.
