Ph.D. Program

Application

An application for admission to the Ph.D. Program in Social Work involves completing an application for admission to the University of Alabama Graduate School (application forms may be downloaded from the Web Forms Center and mailed or completed on line at the Graduate School’s Electronic Application Center) and a separate application to the Ph.D. Program in Social Work. An application fee is required (a form is available at the Graduate School’s Electronic Application Center) and applicants must also submit three letters of reference (forms available at the Graduate School’s Electronic Application Center), one of which should be from an instructor in the applicant’s master’s program; transcripts of all academic work; a statement of purpose (form available at the Graduate School’s Electronic Application Center); a sample of the applicant’s written work; and scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Applicants who wish to apply for financial aid should complete an application for financial aid as well.

Since the Ph.D. is a research degree, the applicant should address her or his research interests in the statement of purpose. An applicant who does not have the M.S.W. degree should address why the Ph.D. in Social Work is the appropriate degree for her or for him in the statement of purpose.

Persons may apply to take Ph.D. courses as non-degree students. A conference with the Ph.D. Chair is required. Application materials are available at the Graduate School’s Electronic Application Center.
