Field Placement: Ghana

I will forever cherish the opportunities I had to pour my heart into creating bonds with the individuals who I was serving. One of the most impactful experiences I had occurred through my interactions with a child who had an intellectual disability and communicated non-verbally. When I first met her she was very skittish and would not let me come near her. However, I learned to become really conscious about my non-verbal cues and eventually she began to trust me. It was hard to believe that that same little girl who was scared of me now ran towards me when I entered the orphanage gates and held my hand. Because of these types of relationships I learned the value of communication and the importance of understanding human behavior. I am truly thankful for this experience.
