50 Years of Excellence in Social Work

Dear Alumni and Friends,

Vikki VandiverThe University of Alabama School of Social Work welcomed its first MSW class of bright and talented students in fall 1967. This year, we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of this important milestone in our School’s rich history.

The arrival of the School’s first 29 MSW students began our journey as a School and set into motion who we are today — a top producer of social work professionals for the state and a leader in social work education. Today, we have more than 7,000 social work alumni who are making an impact in communities and around the world thanks to their UA degree.

We will celebrate our growth and transformation over the last 50 years with school-wide events for alumni, students, current and retired faculty and staff throughout 2017, culminating with a 50th anniversary celebration at Little Hall on April 6, 2018.

As some of you may know, part of our School’s transformation has been taking place over the past several months on campus with the renovation of our building, Little Hall, into a modern, state-of-the-art facility. When I joined the School of Social Work family three years ago, one of the first things I learned is that Little Hall holds special memories for many of our alumni, students, faculty and staff. In recognizing this, we have centered our 50th anniversary celebrations around Little Hall. We have planned the following events:

  • Dean’s Homecoming Reception – Oct.  13, 2017
  • SSW’s Homecoming Parade Watch and Tailgate – Oct. 14, 2017
  • 50th Anniversary Celebration and Little Hall Open House – April 6, 2018

Our 50th anniversary committee, which is comprised of alumni, students, faculty and staff, has been planning these and other events for our alumni and supporters to join us in celebrating our golden anniversary. The committee will be incorporating many of the School’s signature events, which are held annually, into our anniversary celebrations by branding them with our 50th anniversary logo and promotional material. As the committee finalizes dates for events, I will reach out to you to share more about our 50th anniversary celebrations.

I hope that you will mark your calendar to attend these special events honoring our legacy and rich history at The University of Alabama. This is a great opportunity for you to reconnect with our School, other social work alumni, or return to UA’s campus for a visit.

I look forward to commemorating 50 years of social work excellence with you during this momentous year and meeting many of you face-to-face for the first time.

Sincerely,

Vikki L. Vandiver
