Honors Day Awards
The School of Social Work honors its top students for their academic achievements and leadership during Honors Week at The University of Alabama. Social Work student organizations also honor faculty and staff excellence as part of Honors Day. Awards are presented in April at the School’s annual Honors Day Convocation, which includes a guest speaker and reception for students and their parents, faculty and staff.
The University of Alabama’s weeklong recognition of students’ academic achievements will take place April 1-5, 2019.
Excellence in Social Work Writing Award
This award is presented at Honors Day to BSW students who display excellence in Social Work writing.
Danielle Downs Award
The BSW Program Chair selects this student. This award was created in memory of social work student Danielle Downs and honors the most improved BSW student.
All BSW seniors who have earned an overall GPA of 3.5 or higher are eligible for this award. Qualified recipients are determined by the School of Social Work’s registrar.
This award is given to all freshmen, sophomore and junior social work majors with an overall GPA of 3.4 or higher after completion of at least 12 semester hours at the University of Alabama. Qualified recipients are determined by the School of Social Work’s registrar.
This award is given in memory of UA social work alumna Laura Langley (’11), who actively responded to social justice concerns on campus, in the community and nationally as a BSW student. The recipient is chosen each year by Social Work Association for Cultural Awareness (SWACA).
SWACA Social Justice Award
This award is given by SWACA to a BSW student who have demonstrated an interest in social justice causes.
Undergraduate Research and Creativity Conference Award
This award recognizes BSW students who present research at UA’s Undergraduate Research and Creativity Conference and is given at the discretion of the School.
Master’s Scholars Award
This award is given to second-year MSW students who have earned an overall GPA of 4.0. Qualified recipients are determined by the School of Social Work registrar.
MSW Award for Excellence in Social Work Writing
This award recognizes MSW students with excellent writing skills. Two awards are given, one for an analytical/technical paper and one for a clinical paper. The MSW committee selects the recipients.
Recognition of Contribution to Community Award
The doctoral student recipient is selected by the PhD Committee for their work in the community. This award is presented by a PhD student.
Recognition of Contribution to Scholarship Award
The doctoral student recipient is selected by the PhD Committee for their work in scholarship. This award is presented by a PhD student.
Recognition of Contribution to Teaching
The doctoral student recipient is selected by the PhD Committee for their teaching.This award is presented by a PhD student.
Frank R. Egan Award
The Frank R. Egan award is given to a faculty member who promotes academic achievement among all social work students, and a professor who exhibits a high level of concern and commitment to the individual student’s well-being. The award includes honorary membership in Phi Alpha Social Work Honor Society.
Jean B. Rayfield Award
This award recognizes faculty and staff members of The University of Alabama School of Social Work for their outstanding contributions to the students. This award is given by the Undergraduate Social Work Organization and named after the first recipient, Jean B. Rayfield.
DSO Appreciation Award
The Doctoral Student Organization for the School of Social Work selects a faculty or staff to recognize for their assistance to doctoral students.
GSWO Appreciation Award
This award recipient is selected by the Graduate Social Work Organization and given to a School of Social Work faculty or staff member.
