About BHWET Trainees
Students accepted to the BHWET Program through the University of Alabama School of Social Work are 2nd year MSW or Advanced Standing MSW students who have completed a rigorous application and interview process. Trainees demonstrate the skills, motivations, and competency to enter placement with an agency that can offer the experience necessary to enter the behavioral health workforce after graduation.

Trainee benefits include:
- Stipend of $25,000 for the academic year.
- Specialized field seminar with fellow BHWET cohort members focusing on clinical behavioral health skills.
- Additional training on multicultural competence, telehealth service delivery, interprofessional communication, integrated behavioral health, trauma informed interventions, and crisis intervention.
- Professional development, licensure preparation, and workforce readiness.

Eligibility
- Concentration Year or Advanced Standing MSW students
- Expressed interest in behavioral health services to children, adolescents, and/or young adults through a multidisciplinary approach
- Open to all US based students (Both Distance Learning and On-Campus students are eligible to apply)
Application Process
- Applications for the BHWET Program are accepted during the Practicum Application period and close two days following the closure of SWIS.
- Step 1: Complete preliminary BHWET Qualtrics Survey, found here.
- Note: You will be required to upload a resume and two professional recommendation letters. The deadline for 2026-2027 Advanced Standing students is Wednesday, June 10, 2026 at 11:45 PM CST.
- Step 2: Apply for practicum in SWIS and designate BHWET as a stipend program interest.

- Students selected for progression will participate in a formal Zoom interview with School of Social Work faculty and staff.
Program Requirements
- Admission to the Program is contingent upon the Trainee’s agreement to the following requirements:
- Trainees must be a citizen, national, or permanent resident of the United States.
- Trainees must be committed to learning and practicing integrated behavioral healthcare with children, adolescents, and young adults in healthcare practice shortage areas (HPSAs).
- Trainees must be enrolled full or part-time in The University of Alabama’s MSW program.
- Trainees must complete all the project’s ten EJF-IBH didactic training modules.
- Trainees must participate in assigned Simulation Lab experiences.
- Trainees must complete a project approved specialization practicum and receive a grade no lower than a “B” in the associated seminar.
- Trainees must provide project staff with post-graduate employment data for a minimum of one year post graduation.
