50th Anniversary Events

School of Social Work events taking place through April 2018 will celebrate our 50th anniversary year. Some of our festivities are annual events and others are signature events we have planned specifically for the School’s 50th anniversary. We hope you’ll join us in honoring our rich legacy and history at The University of Alabama as part of our year-long 50th Anniversary celebration.

September

Fall 2017 Psychopharmacology Workshop

Dr. Kia J. Bentley, a professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, will present the workshop, “The Social Worker, Psychopharmacology and Medication Management: What Social Workers Need to Know.” Her workshop will focus on the contemporary context of psychiatric medication use today, especially where social work fits in that schema and what research suggests we should be doing with clients and why. Content will emphasize how to, first, create an alliance with clients, families and prescribers and embrace a client-centered “partnership” perspective, and second, how to be a truly meaningful resource to clients and families around medication-related dilemmas. The $159 workshop fee covers program materials, breakfast and lunch.

Social Work Society Supporters Annual Meeting

The Board of the Social Work Society, an affiliate organization of the Capstone Foundation, will meet for their annual meeting. Alumni and supporters make of the board and meet regularly to discuss the goals, programs, and activities of the UA School of Social Work. The meeting is 0pen to all 2016-2017 Social Work Society Supporters.

2017 Alabama Social Work Hall of Fame Luncheon

Founded by the Social Work Society, the Alabama Social Work Hall of Fame recognizes outstanding social workers who have made an exceptional impact on the profession, the community and/or social work education in the state of Alabama. 16th Annual Fall Social Work Conference

Amelia Franck Meyer, founder and CEO of Alia, will serve as the conference’s keynote speaker. The two-day conference, “Well-being: Seeing the Big Picture,” will offer workshops that continue the discussion on issues related to child well-being as well as workforce well-being. The conference is designed with the public child welfare workforce in mind but would be beneficial to anyone working with at risk children and their families, including school social workers, therapists, foster parents and child placing agencies. The conference early bird fee is $100 for two days and $125 after Sept. 21. The conference’s one-day fee is a $75.

SWES Licensure Prep Workshop

Social Work Examination Services'(SWES) faculty member Dr. Deborah Cantor will lead the social work exam licensure prep courses at The University of Alabama. She is an educator and experienced, licensed clinician who has worked with adolescents, adults and couples. The exam fee will cover Lunch on exam day and each registrant will receive the three-volume SWES Comprehensive Study Guide. The guide contains a complete content review and over 1,600 sample multiple-choice questions, including five 170-question practice exams and a bibliography.

Faculty and Staff Pumpkin Carving Contest

Faculty and staff are invited to participate in the School’s Pumpkin Carving Contest for the month of October. Faculty and staff can pick up a pumpkin for the contest in the Dean’s Office through Oct. 30. Those who want to participate will need to take a pumpkin home to paint, carve and decorate. All pumpkins will be displayed in the lobby of Little Hall on Oct. 31, Halloween day. The most creative pumpkin will win a prize. For questions, contact Barry Durand at bpdurand@sw.ua.edu.

The 22nd Annual SSWR Conference theme is “Achieving Equal Opportunity, Equity, and Justice” and will be held Jan. 10-14 in Washington, D.C. Every year, UA social work faculty and student scholars showcase their research during the conference and the school hosts a reception for faculty, staff, students and alumni during the conference. 29th Annual Dr. Ethel H. Hall African American Heritage Month Celebration

The School of Social Work’s 29th annual Dr. Ethel H. Hall African American Heritage Month Celebration will focus on the death penalty and criminal justice reform. The event’s guest speaker is Anthony Ray Hinton, who was falsely accused and convicted in 1985 for the murders of two fast-food restaurant managers near Birmingham. He spent 30 years on Alabama’s death row before being freed in April 2015 after a 15-year fight for the state to re-examine evidence in his case and order a new trial. Today, Hinton is a community educator at the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery. He will visit SSW to share his story of conviction and redemption and to discuss the role of race in the American criminal justice system and the need for criminal justice reform. This event is free to students, faculty, staff and open to the public.

From 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., SSW students, faculty, staff and members of the Alabama/Mississippi Planning Committee are invited to a lunch of turnip greens, chicken with white barbecue sauce, fried catfish, mix vegetables and a selection of deserts.

2018 Social Work Month

The 2018 Social Work Month theme is “Social Workers: Leaders. Advocates. Champions” to recognize that every day the nation’s 650,000 social workers act as advocates, champions and leaders who make our society a better place to live. As the nation commemorates Social Work Month in March, it is important for the public to also recognize that the need for social workers to be strong advocates, champions and leaders is more important than ever.

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy with Youth and Families

This workshop will cover Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), a strengths-oriented and resource-focused approach to counseling backed by research that shows it is a useful approach for reducing behavioral and emotional problems and increasing academic achievement in school settings.  The guest speaker is Cynthia Franklin, associate dean of doctoral education and the Stiernberg/Spencer Family Professor in Mental Health at the University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work.
