Dr. Stephanie Mitchell is the founder of Birth Sanctuary Gainesville (501(c)(3)), a free-standing, midwifery-led birth center in Sumter County, Alabama, providing comprehensive prenatal care and midwifery services for labor and birth at the center as well as support for families planning home births. She is also a Certified Nurse-Midwife at WAWC (formerly West Alabama Women’s Center) in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where she provides full-scope midwifery care. Prior to founding Birth Sanctuary, Stephanie practiced in Boston, Massachusetts, and Providence, Rhode Island, in full-scope, collaborative OB-GYN/midwifery and academic clinical settings, and previously worked as both a labor and delivery nurse and a pediatric nurse. After relocating to Alabama with her family in 2020, she expanded her scope of practice by becoming a Certified Professional Midwife, enabling her to provide midwifery care and attend births in out-of-hospital settings.
