About the Hall of Fame

The University of Alabama School of Social Work Hall of Fame, founded in 1997 by the Social Work Society, honors the accomplishments of some of Alabama’s most distinguished leaders in the field of social work. Every year, the School of Social Work hosts a luncheon to celebrate honorees’ achievements and welcome a new class of inductees. View a list of Hall of Fame members.

Inductees nominated by members of the Social Work Society are reviewed by Hall of Fame Committee and forwarded to The University of Alabama’s Office of the President and the Social Work Society Board of Directors for review and final decision. All members who have contributed to the Social Work Society Annual for the 2023 calendar year are eligible to make a nomination.

NOTE: The deadline for submitting nominations is July 1, 2024.

Criteria for Selection to the Hall of Fame

• Must be retired from paid, full-time Social Work employment and be 65 or older
• Must have character consistent with the standards of the Social Work profession
• Must have a social work degree from an accredited program and have practiced in the field, been engaged in research, or educated others as a social work faculty member in higher ed
• Must be recognized as a highly influential leader in practice or education for social work, or in governmental bodies or institutions of the community
• Must have shown originality and creativity in making outstanding contributions either to clinical practice; policy/practice; the legislative process in the interest of social welfare; professional literature; social work research; or administration, resource development, or community well-being
• Must have resided in Alabama for at least some part of their life
• Posthumous nominations are accepted
