School of Social Work Financial Aid

The University of Alabama and the School of Social Work offers scholarships, grants, loans and work-study options that help students defray some of the costs associated with earning a college degree.

SSW Stipends

The School of Social Work offers a limited number of stipends for student travel for educational purposes, research projects (excluding dissertations), academic support and emergency assistance. Students should contact their Program Directors or refer to their Student Toolkits about stipend application policies and procedures.

SSW Practicum Education Stipends

Additional stipends are available through the Office of Experiential Programs. These stipends are related to specific practicum education settings. Students should contact the Office of Experiential Programs for deadlines, policies and procedures for these stipends.

SSW Scholarships

All newly admitted and returning BSW and MSW students are invited to apply for Endowed Scholarships offered by the School of Social Work early in the Spring semester.

Students admitted to the MSW Primarily Online Program may also apply for scholarship opportunities through Office of Teaching Innovation and Digital Education (OTIDE).

The following list includes scholarships that have been established by our generous alumni and donors. All scholarship applications are reviewed by a committee of faculty within the School of Social Work and assigned to students based on the quality of their application and their academic performance, in addition to the criteria outlined in each scholarship.

The Ada Kate Morgan Endowed Scholarship in Social Work
This scholarship was established by Ada Kate Morgan and is awarded to a graduate student in the School of Social Work.

The Alabama Civil Justice Foundation Endowed Scholarship in the School of Social Work
This scholarship was established by the Alabama Civil Justice Foundation Board of Directors and is awarded to a Social Work student who demonstrates financial need.

The Arlene Mitchell Endowed Scholarship in Social Work
This scholarship was established by Arlene and Mayer Mitchell and Abraham A. Mitchell and is awarded to a full-time student enrolled in the School of Social Work.

Ben Avis Adams Orcutt Endowed Doctoral Student Fellowship Fund (Ph.D.)
This fellowship was established by friends and associates of Professor Emeritus Ben Avis Adams Orcutt and is awarded to a student enrolled in the Ph.D. program in the School of Social Work.

The Board of Friends Endowed Washington D.C. Scholarship (MSW)
This scholarship was established by the School of Social Work Board of Friends and is awarded to outstanding MSW students who are participating in the Washington Practicum Education Program and who demonstrate financial need.

The Cartis T. and Rose N. Roff Endowed Scholarship in Social Work (MSW)
This scholarship was established by Lucinda Lee Roff and David L. Klemmack and is awarded to a full-time MSW student.

The Cassie Wallace-Helen Brown Endowed Scholarship in the School of Social Work
This scholarship was established by John L. Wallace and Jill Adam and is awarded to a student in the School of Social Work who intends to pursue a career in the area of working with elderly and aging persons.

The Charles R. Atherton Memorial Endowed Scholarship in the School of Social Work
This scholarship was established by Zoe A. Atherton and is awarded to a Social Work student who demonstrates the greatest financial need at that time.

The Charles S. Prigmore Endowed Graduate Scholarship in Social Work
This scholarship was established by Professor Emeritus Dr. Charles S. Prigmore and is awarded to a graduate student enrolled in the School of Social Work who is pursuing a concentration in planning and management.

The Coy Albert Stout II Endowed Scholarship in the School of Social Work (MSW)
This scholarship was established by Coy Albert Stout II and is awarded to outstanding MSW students who are participating in the Washington Practicum Education Program and who demonstrate financial need.

The Daniel Foundation Endowed Scholarship of Social Work (MSW)
This scholarship was established by The Daniel Foundation of Alabama and is awarded to the most outstanding undergraduate from each of Alabama’s accredited undergraduate programs in Social Work who are accepted into the one-year Advanced Standing Program in the School of Social Work at the University of Alabama.

The Doris Bender Memorial Endowed Scholarship in the School of Social Work (MSW)
This scholarship was established by Aurelia (Missy) Hooks Benton and Leroy H. Benton III and is awarded to an MSW student.

The Dr. and Mrs. Harold D. Shambley Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Dr. Harold D. Shambley and is awarded to a Social Work student with preference given to a student who is a veteran.

The Dr. Ginny Terry Raymond Endowed Scholarship in the School of Social Work (MSW)
This scholarship was established by friends of Dr. Ginny Terry Raymond and The University of Alabama Social Work Society and is awarded to an MSW student who demonstrates financial need.

Dr. Gordon and Dixie Kramer MacNeil Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Dr. Gordon and Mrs. Dixie Kramer MacNeil and is awarded to a graduate student enrolled in the distance learning graduate program in the School of Social Work that is administered by the College of Continuing Studies.

The Dr. James P. “Ike” Adams Jr. Endowed Scholarship in the School of Social Work (MSW)
This scholarship was established by the School of Social Work Board of Friends and friends and family of Dr. James P. “Ike” Adams Jr and is awarded to an MSW student who has a history of community service.

The Dr. Raymond O. Sumrall Endowed Scholarship (MSW)
This scholarship was established by Dr. Malenna Sumrall and is awarded to an MSW student in their second year who possesses a 3.0 (4.0) or higher GPA in their graduate work and is interested in pursuing a career in juvenile justice.

The Ehney A. and Mildred Fletcher Tillman Camp Endowed Scholarship in the School of Social Work (MSW)
This scholarship was established by The Ehney Addison Camp Jr. and Mildred Fletcher Tilman Camp Foundation of Birmingham, AL, to honor the memory of Trustee Emeritus Ehney Addison Camp Jr., and is awarded to an MSW student in the School of Social Work.

The Emma Jean and James P. Adams Sr. Endowed Scholarship in the School of Social Work (MSW)
This scholarship was established by the family and friends of Emma Jean and James P. Adams Sr. and is awarded to an MSW student with preference given to a student who graduated from a high school in Mississippi.

The Eulene Hawkins/Alabama Chapter – NASW Endowed Scholarship in Social Work (MSW)
This scholarship was established by the National Association of Social Workers – Alabama Chapter, and friends and associates of Eulene Hawkins and will be given as two awards. One will be given to a student entering the on-campus MSW program who was a Eulene Hawkins scholarship (BSW) recipient from Troy University; the second will be given to a student entering the MSW program who was a graduate from any CSWE accredited Social Work program in Alabama other than Troy University.

The Founders and Friends/Marilyn Brewer Lauber Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was established by the founders and friends of the School of Social Work and friends and family of the late Dr. Marilyn Brewer Lauber and is awarded to a graduate student in the School of Social Work.

Frank R. Eagan Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund (BSW)
This scholarship was established by an anonymous donor and will be awarded to a disadvantaged student admitted to the BSW program in the School of Social Work.

Hill Crest Foundation Endowed Scholarship in Social Work
This scholarship was established by the Hill Crest Foundation of Birmingham and is awarded to a Social Work student.

Hill Crest Foundation, Inc., Graduate Scholarship Fund (MSW)
This scholarship was established by the Hill Crest Foundation Inc. Board of Trustees and is awarded to an MSW student with a strong interest in mental health careers.

Howard B. Gundy Endowed Scholarship Fund (BSW)
This scholarship was established by friends and associates of Dr. Howard B. Gundy and will be awarded to a graduating high school senior who has expressed a desire to pursue a career in Social Work and whose demonstrated academic ability, character, and college entrance examination scores indicate a high probability of outstanding performance as students at UA.

The James A. “Jim” Ray Endowed Scholarship (MSW)
This scholarship was established by Mr. James A. Ray and is awarded to a full-time MSW student who is married with children.

The James and Teresa Duggan and James and Elizabeth Ball Endowed Scholarship in Social Work (MSW)
This scholarship was established by Dr. and Mrs. James C. Ball and is awarded to a full-time MSW student.

The James C. Sellers Endowed Scholarship in the School of Social Work
This scholarship was established by Mr. James Wayne Sellers and friends of the late James C. Sellers and is awarded to a Social Work student who demonstrates financial need, with preference given to a student who graduated from a high school in Guntersville, AL or Marshall County, AL.

The Jean and Raymond Rayfield Endowed Scholarship in the School of Social Work
This scholarship was established by Jan & Frank Cusimano and Emily & Steve Jay and is awarded to a female, full-time student who is pursuing a graduate degree in the School of Social Work and demonstrates financial need.

The Jeannie A. Duke Endowed Scholarship (MSW)
This scholarship was established by Francis A. Loop and E. James Loop II and is awarded to an outstanding MSW student who possesses a history of community service and demonstrates financial need. Preference will be given to a student who received their Bachelor of Social Work degrees from the University of Montevallo.

The Jerry E. Griffin Memorial Endowed Scholarship for BSW Students in the School of Social Work (BSW)
This scholarship was established by Stephen B. Griffin and family members of the late Jerry E. Griffin and is awarded to a full-time BSW student who demonstrates financial need.

The Jim Loop Children’s Endowed Scholarship in the School of Social Work (BSW/MSW)
This scholarship was established by Tony D. Walker and will be awarded to a full-time BSW or MSW student to fund practical experiences in the field. Priority of consideration shall be given to students who demonstrate financial need, were raised in foster homes or residential care, whose career plans include a strong emphasis on advocacy for children and families, and whose academic records indicate a reasonable probability of future academic and professional success.

The John W. Nixon – Fiesta Bowl Endowed Scholarship in Social Work (MSW)
This scholarship was established by Dr. Roger Sayers and family & friends of the late Dr. John W. Nixon and is awarded to a full-time MSW student.

The Johnny Prewitt Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Johnny L. Prewitt and is awarded to a Social Work student who demonstrates financial need, with preference given to a student who graduated from a high school in Mobile County, AL.

The Julia B. Caddell Endowed Scholarship in the School of Social Work
This scholarship was established by Julia B. Caddell and is awarded to a full-time adult student who expresses an interest in health care or child care, demonstrates financial need, and is beginning or continuing their education after being in the workforce.

The Kilgo Howard Endowed Graduate Scholarship Fund in Social Work (MSW/Ph.D.)
This scholarship was established by the Tuscaloosa Civitan Club of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and is awarded to a graduate student who is a US citizen or permanent resident, who qualifies for in-state tuition and demonstrates financial need.

The Kimberly H. Nixon Endowed Scholarship (MSW)
This scholarship was established by Margaret H. Nixon, friends of the Nixon family and The University of Alabama School of Social Work and is awarded to a female MSW student entering the program with preference given to a student from Tuskegee, AL, or Tuskegee University.

L.C. Keasler Rural Student Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Philip L. Browning and is awarded to a student who demonstrates financial need, with preference given to a student who graduated from a high school in Pickens County, AL, or another rural county in AL.

The Laura Langley Memorial Endowed Scholarship in the School of Social Work
This scholarship was established by Ann and Jim Langley and is awarded to a student who demonstrates the greatest potential to succeed in making the world a better place through social work and demonstrates a financial need.

The Leslie J. Shellhase Endowed Scholarship (Ph.D.)
This scholarship was established by Dr. Leslie J. Shellhase and is awarded to a Ph.D. student in Social Work who has been advanced to candidacy for the degree.

The Linda G. Ackerson Endowed Scholarship in the School of Social Work
This scholarship was established by Barry J. Ackerson and is awarded to a student in Social Work.

The Lola Louise Bealle Endowed Scholarship in the School of Social Work
This scholarship was established by the late Lola Louise Bealle and is awarded to a full-time student in Social Work.

The Loraine Bedsole Tunstall Endowed Scholarship in Social Work (MSW)
This scholarship was established by the J. L. Bedsole Foundation and is awarded to an MSW student who is interested in child welfare, with preference given to a student from Mobile, AL.

The Lori Kaye Hebert Endowed Scholarship in Social Work (MSW)
This scholarship was established by Murphy and Suzonne Hebert and other members of Lori Kaye Hebert’s family and is awarded to an MSW student who has career interests in mental retardation and developmental disabilities.

The Louise Pittman Endowed Scholarship in the School of Social Work (MSW)
This scholarship was established by the Child Welfare Policy and Practice Group and is awarded to an MSW student who has an interest in a career in child welfare and demonstrates financial need, with preference given to a student who graduated from a high school in Alabama.

The Lucille Clark Bennett Endowed Scholarship in Social Work (MSW)
This scholarship was established by the Claude Bennett Family Foundation of Birmingham, Alabama, and is awarded to an outstanding MSW student in their concentration year of study with a career interest in geriatrics.

The Madeline M. Hill Endowed Social Work Scholarship (MSW)
This scholarship was established by Dr. William Winternitz and is awarded to an MSW student who has an interest in social work planning and management.

The Mary Edna Porter/Gateway Endowed Scholarship in the School of Social Work (MSW)
This scholarship was established by Gateway of Birmingham, Alabama, and is awarded to an MSW student who is pursuing a degree in the area of children, adolescents, and families.

The Nell Hopkins Clarkson and Sue Clarkson Phifer Endowed Scholarship (MSW)
This scholarship was awarded by the Reese Phifer, Jr. Memorial Foundation and is awarded to an MSW student.

The Noh and Lee Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Dr. Hyunjin Noh and Mr. Changjae Lee and is awarded to a student who is in good academic standing and participating in the International Field Placement. Preference will be given to students placed in Asia with special consideration given to students who have taken at least one semester of the foreign language spoken in the country of their placement.

The Peggy Spain McDonald Endowed Scholarship in Social Work (MSW)
This scholarship was established by The Greater Birmingham Foundation and is awarded to an MSW student from the greater Birmingham area.

The Russell and Barbara Beaulieu Endowed Support Fund in the School of Social Work
This scholarship was established by Amy Beaulieu Mansue and is awarded to a student who demonstrates a financial need and an interest in planning and management.

The School of Social Work Board of Friends Endowed Scholarship (BSW)
This scholarship was established by The School of Social Work Board of Friends and is awarded to a BSW student in the School of Social Work.

The Shirley B. Prigmore Graduate Endowed Scholarship in Social Work (MSW)
This scholarship was established by the late Charles S. Prigmore of The University of Alabama’s School of Social Work and Philip & Carol Prigmore and is awarded to an MSW student who has career interests in planning and management, specifically in the area of child welfare.

The Social Work Alumni Hall Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was established by alumni of the School of Social Work and is awarded to a student with a 2.0 minimum GPA (4.0) who demonstrates a financial need. Special consideration will be given to students who have faced hardships in either their personal lives or at home, such as foster care, homelessness, kinship care, adoption, or the death of a parent, and may not otherwise be able to attend college due to financial need.

The Social Work Society – Dean Lucinda L. Roff Endowed Scholarship (MSW)
This scholarship was established by the Social Work Society and is awarded to an MSW student who is enrolled full-time in the second semester of 2nd year of the MSW program.

The Vikki Vandiver and Kevin Corcoran Endowed Scholarship for the Study of Animal-Assisted Interventions and Practice
This scholarship was established by Vikki L. Vandiver and Kevin Corcoran and is awarded to a student to support internships and scholarly efforts of students who are interested in studying and advancing the practice and science of animal-assisted interventions. Preference is given to students in good academic standing with an interest in equine human-animal interactions.

The Vulcan Materials Company Endowed Scholarship in the School of Social Work
This scholarship was established by the Vulcan Materials Company Foundation of Birmingham, Alabama, and is awarded to a Social Work student.

The Vulcan Materials Washington Program Endowed Scholarship MSW students participating in the Washington Field Education Program (MSW)
This scholarship was established by the Vulcan Materials Company Foundation of Birmingham, Alabama, and is awarded to outstanding students pursuing a master’s in social work who are participating in the Washington Field Education Program and demonstrate financial need.

The Warren G. Augins Endowed Scholarship Fund (MSW)
This scholarship was established by colleagues, friends, and former students of Warren G. Augins and is awarded to a full-time, first-year, MSW student.
