Dr. Brian E. Bride Named New Hill Crest Endowed Chair in Mental Health

The University of Alabama School of Social Work is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Brian E. Bride as the Hill Crest Foundation Endowed Chair in Mental Health. Dr. Bride brings a wealth of expertise, dedication, and leadership to our community, marking an exciting new chapter in our commitment to advancing mental health education and research.

Dr. Bride’s educational background is extensive, including an M.P.H. from Harvard University, a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia, an M.S.W. from Florida State University, and a B.A. from the University of Florida. As a distinguished researcher, he is known for his pioneering work in mental health, substance misuse, and H.I.V. prevention and intervention.

Bride’s international recognition is a testament to his significant contributions, particularly his efforts in understanding and addressing secondary traumatic stress. He is the developer of the Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale, which has been translated into over two dozen languages.

Dr. Bride’s exceptional achievements have earned him a place among the ‘world’s top 2% of scientists’ by Stanford University and the ‘top 50 global social work scholars’ in a study published in Research on Social Work. His research, featured in prestigious publications such as the Stanford Social Innovation Review, Newsweek, The Atlantic, and The Washington Post, highlights the far-reaching influence of his work.
