The Fly In is a unique in-depth policy practice and advocacy experience that was created as part of an application for a CSWE grant to infuse policy into field education. Although the school did not receive the grant, the UA School of Social Work has successfully conducted five annual Fly Ins, with the past two being held virtually due to COVID. Several schools have asked to participate with UA in the D.C. Fly In, including Ohio State, Indiana University, University of Alabama at Birmingham and University of Alabama at Huntsville, and participation has ranged from 40-70 students each year.

Fly In participants are selected through a competitive application and interview process in the fall. This year, UAB is sponsoring the event ($1,000). While any student at the University of Alabama is welcome to apply, the program’s primary focus is on social work.

The UA School of Social Work MSW DC students are the leaders of the 2022 Fly In. They have created the 4 policy fact sheets for the 4 bills.

The 2022 participants will have the chance to hear addresses from the Presidents of CSWE and NASW and experts in policy and advocacy. Students will advocate for the 4 bills with 2 scheduled visits with members of Congress. After increasing their confidence through successful visits on Capitol Hill, the culminating event will be an inspirational panel discussion on careers in Social Work with alumni of the DC Program.

See Washington, DC Internship Program for more information on the School of Social Work’s D.C. Fly In and internships programs.
