Declaration of Multiple Majors or a Dual Degree

Students may pursue multiple majors (two or more majors) at the same time within a single bachelor’s degree. It is important for students to know the difference between a double major vs. dual degree.

In a double major, students earn one degree with two majors. A minimum of 120 hours must be completed, and all requirements for both majors must be met.

In a dual degree, students must earn a minimum of 150 hours and must meet all degree requirements for each major/degree type. This may include a minor, depending on the degree(s).

Students who are interested in pursuing multiple majors or a dual degree should review the Undergraduate Catalog first. Students can declare up to two majors on their myBama. To declare a third major, dual degree, or if an error message appears, students should email the Student Services Program Manager at sswadvisor@ua.edu and include their name, CWID and their intended programs of study

Late Add Petition

Students who are requesting to register for a class after the last day of add/drop should submit their request through the Late Add Petition.

Note: instructor approval is required, please see the details in the petition.

Late Drop Petition

Students who are requesting to withdraw from a class after the last day to drop with a “W” for the semester should submit a Late Drop Petition. Note: petitions must demonstrate truly extenuating circumstances to be considered. Submitting a petition is not a guarantee of approval, so continue participating in the class until you hear a final decision.

No petitions will be considered after the final day of classes, or if a final grade has already been posted for the course.

Request to Register for More Than 18 hours

Social Work students who are requesting to register for over 18 hours should submit the request through the Max Hour Override Request form. Note: students must meet the criteria noted on the form to be eligible for excess hours. Submitting your information through this request form does not guarantee approval.

Academic Bankruptcy

Academic bankruptcy is a retroactive withdrawal from one semester by students who may have experienced extreme personal or financial circumstances that negatively impacted their academic ability. Review the information in the Undergraduate Catalog for important considerations. To view the criteria for Academic Bankruptcy or to file a petition, please visit the Academic Bankruptcy link. Submitting your information through this link does not guarantee approval. If you have any questions, please email the Student Services Program Manager at sswadvisor@ua.edu.

Request to Walk Out of Turn at Graduation

Some students may find themselves in a unique situation that necessitates walking “out of turn” at graduation. These circumstances may include students in a joint degree program, students moving out of state prior to their last semester, or other similar situations. Please submit the Walk Out of Turn Petition and provide the necessary details. Email the Student Services Program Manager at sswadvisor@ua.edu with any additional questions.

Reinstatement from Suspension

The University of Alabama’s Suspension Policy will be strictly observed. However, students with exceptional circumstances may submit an appeal for an exception.

Currently enrolled students who are placed on suspension at the end of the semester will automatically receive a petition via crimson email.

Students placed on indefinite suspension who are not currently enrolled can submit a Reinstatement from Suspension Petition. Completion of the petition for reinstatement does not guarantee approval.

Academic Second Opportunity

Academic Second Opportunity (ASO) is an opportunity for students who have not been enrolled at The University of Alabama for at least three full academic years. Students should be re-admitted through University Admissions and then, at the beginning of their first semester back, can petition for Academic Second Opportunity through the School of Social Work. ASO changes all prior UA coursework to either a “P” (classes with a C- or higher) or a “W” (classes with a D or F), resetting the student’s UA GPA. Review the information in the Undergraduate Catalog for important considerations.

For more information or to file a petition for ASO, please visit the Academic Second Opportunity link. Submitting your information through this link does not guarantee approval. Once a decision has been made, students will receive an email from the Student Services Program Manager concerning next steps.
