Continuing Education

Continuing Education

The School of Social Work’s Continuing Education (CE) Program is offered in partnership with the College of Continuing Studies at The University of Alabama to meet the continuing education needs of social work professionals in Alabama and beyond.

Our CE program launched in summer 2017 with the goal to make social work professional development and career advancement a top priority. Through the program, social work professionals can:

  • Earn CEUs online or by attending in-person workshops
  • Explore new career paths
  • Meet licensing requirements
  • Gain new skillsets and expand your skillset to meet growing employer demands
  • Enhance your ability to tackle pressing social issues to improve lives
  • Network with other social work professionals and UA faculty experts
  • Gain needed skills to take the ASWB licensing exam

Workshops

Our in-person workshops provide participants with a rigorous array of timely and relevant interdisciplinary courses in social work that bear the UA stamp of excellence. All courses are taught by social work faculty and workshop presenters who are national experts in their fields. CE course topics include:

  • Trauma informed practice
  • Psychopharmacology for social workers
  • Military families
  • Ethics

Workshops are held at the Bryant Conference Center on The University of Alabama campus in Tuscaloosa. All workshop participants receive a certificate indicating the number of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) offered for attending a workshop. Certificates will usually be available on-site at the completion of the program.

Licensure Preparation Courses

Our Social Work License Preparation Course is designed for BSW exam candidates, recent MSW graduates and experienced practitioners taking the Association of Social Work Board (ASWB) licensing examination. Course materials are provided by Social Work Examination Services (SWES), a trusted university partner and leader in providing courses to prepare social workers for license examination throughout the United States.

Additionally, all of our license prep courses are approved by SWES and emphasize a review of major social work content and test preparation. The course provides sessions that cover the following areas:

  • Test-taking skills
  • A review of human behavior and psychopathology
  • Work with special populations
  • The elderly, children and families, addictions
  • DSM5
  • Clinical practice with individuals and groups, including ethics and laws affecting social workers

Licensure Prep Courses are typically offered in the spring and fall. Courses are held at the Bryant Conference Center on the The University of Alabama campus in Tuscaloosa.
